Loaded Theatre
My BFA work investigates contemporary modes of femininity and beauty and thereby their alliances with other social agendas. Drawing inspiration from timeless starlets women such as Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly, I use my body in voyeuristic posses to examine my identity as a women and the sexual power I believe women posses. I believe that performance and photography have always gone hand in hand, especially in early feminist works. By drawing from my background in drama, I am exploring these performative and theatrical, aspects to my work, referencing mass media, fashion, and the pin up.
These layered assemblages are united within a clear medium, creating sealed environments of coded, suggestive images and objects that are delivered through the use of textural nuances and depth. These environments offer to the viewer a ‘loaded theatre’ that is at once inaccessible in their encapsulation, yet visually available and engaging. My pieces explore, among other issues, the notion of the Aphrodisiacal and the relationship between hunger and desire.
