Stitching Prototypes Together
Interested in embroidery? Interested in online dating? Hate online dating? Have some stories, thoughts, and/or opinions about contemporary courtship in this era of the screen, apps, and sexting? University of Calgary Graduate Candidate in Fine Arts, Kenzie Housego is also interested in these. Her research explores contemporary courtship rituals and their relationship to historical modes of romantic communication.

As part of her research, Kenzie is commencing a collaborative visual art project in March, 2020, inviting individuals to attend an upcoming “Stitch and Bitch/Stitching Bee” event. At these sessions, Kenzie will provide a lesson in embroidery - with thread and materials provided, along with an array of blank electronic prototype boards to use as a canvas. Come and try your hand at this craft intervention, where traditional craft meets technology, and where you can share your experiences and thoughts on digital dating. Participants will be encouraged to create an embroidered prototype board inspired or influenced by thoughts, ideas, feelings, or experiences related to contemporary courtship: online dating, digital communication and or miscommunication.
No cross-stitching or embroidery experience is necessary. Kenzie will provide a beginner’s how-to lesson with guidance in basic stitches that will spark your creativity while you ponder modern love.
All feedback and pieces created at these “Stitch and Bitch” meetups will contribute to a larger mosaic artwork that will be displayed in its first iteration in April 2020, and following that, in an exhibition in September 2020. Hopefully, the combination of artistic styles, stories, and ideas will represent a broad perspective of this multifaceted subject.
Participation is anonymous, participants will be asked to sign a non-discloser agreement.
